UNAM does not have the power to annul Yasmin Esquivel's degree in case plagiarism is found in her thesis.

The UNAM seems to be tied hand and foot in the case of the alleged plagiarism of minister Yasmin Esquivel's bachelor's thesis, since the highest house of studies does not have the power to invalidate the lawyer's degree even if it is determined that it is plagiarism, said Eduardo Andrade Sanchez, former general counsel of the UNAM. Although plagiarism is a crime typified in the penal code, it does not cover the scope of professional theses and neither would it have any legal responsibility. The former general counsel assures that there is no precedent where a university degree is annulled for plagiarism or sanctions in this regard. He explains that the university does not have the authority to subpoena the minister but that she will present everything to prove the authenticity of her work at the Facultad de Estudios Superiores Aragón.
