What is the origin of the conflict between #Ukraine and #Russia and why is it of international relevance?

The recent tension on the Ukrainian-Russian border is nothing new. Since 2014, the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine has been embroiled in a bitter conflict that has already left more than 14,000 fatalities. Russia's annexation of Crimea triggered a series of movements that have made this war in Ukraine a conflict at the international level. NATO and the European Union see in this former Soviet republic a potential ally, while the Kremlin fears that Kiev will move further away from Moscow.
