Why the eruption of the Volcano of Fire left so many dead?

The Hawaiian volcano of Kilauea has been active for a month now expelling a large amount of magma and, however, has not claimed the life of any inhabitant of the area. Meanwhile, the recent eruption of the Volcán de Fuego in Guatemala has already left 70 people dead. How is this difference explained in the level of human harm caused by both phenomena?
