Compensation for ex-followers of Japan’s Unification Church
by Nagny
The Unification Church in Japan announced on November 7, 2022, that it will set aside 10 billion yen (US$67 million) to compensate former followers and their families who say they were harmed by church fundraising tactics. The Japanese government has asked a court to revoke the church's legal status, following questions about its fundraising and recruitment methods, which have been in the spotlight after the assassination of former prime minister Shinzo Abe in July 2022. The killing triggered an investigation of decades of close ties between the church and Japan's ruling party, prompting public outrage and legal action.
