China confirms Japanese national arrested in Beijing on suspicion of spying

The Japanese government has called for the release of one of its nationals arrested in Beijing. Tokyo confirmed on October 19, 2023, that the 50-year old Japanese was detained in March. Chinese authorities said the man was suspected of engaging in espionage, but neither China nor Japan has disclosed details of the case. The Japanese company Astellas Pharma identified the man as an employee of the firm.
