Omicron advances because vaccines did not reach Africa; the world's poor were abandoned: #AMLO

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador affirmed that the omicron variant arose in Africa because vaccines did not reach the countries of that continent and the poorest in the world were abandoned. This is the problem of great inequality, said the Mexican president and described as shameful the work done by the United Nations (UN) and the COVAX mechanism that emerged as a collaboration to ensure equitable access to vaccines against covid-19 in the world. What is happening with the variant (omicron) is because the vaccines did not reach Africa, it is not that the new variant is terrible, it is that the poor of the world were abandoned, as it usually happens," he said. He added: The COVAX mechanism was created to deliver vaccines so that poor countries would have vaccines and it turns out that, as of today, this mechanism has distributed five percent of all the vaccines applied, it is a shame and 95 percent are vaccines of the big laboratories and pharmaceutical companies, he said. In the morning conference, the head of the Executive commented that he observed an interview published in the digital version of the newspaper El País where the person in charge of the vaccination program in Africa denounces the isolation and lack of access to the biologicals that are distributed in the world. "She says that if covid-19 had hit Africa alone, they would have fenced it in and thrown away the key, that is to say, they would have put them in a cage and forgotten about it," assured President López Obrador.
