Student speaks fight in school

A Butler High School student has been suspended after her family got into a fight with a school resource officer at a basketball game Friday night. The brawl was caught on tape by NewsChannel 36 sports anchor Ira Cronin. It happened at East Mecklenburg High School Friday night, during the boys' basketball game. Ernest Owens told NewsChannel 36 on Monday that his daughter has been suspended from school and the basketball team for at least 10 days. Owens said the argument started when the resource officer asked his daughter to move from the East Meck side of the gym back to the Butler side. Owens' daughter plays for Butler's girls' basketball team, which had just wrapped up its game. Owens said his daughter attended East Meck last year and wanted to say hello to a former coach sitting on the East Meck side. Owens said staff members told his daughter to leave, and that's when the argument began. Owens admitted he exchanged words with the resource officer and then the confrontation got physical. The video shows Owens' wife jumping in, along with their daughter, and hitting the officer in the head. Owens was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, assault on a government official and resisting an officer. Because of the scuffle, Owens said he will resign as coach of the Charlotte 76ers girls' AAU basketball team.
