Agonizing Process for Joker to Obtain "R" Classification

Joker, the next independent Warner Brothers and DC movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix, promises to be a comics movie like no other. Inspired mostly by the works of Martin Scorsese and co-starring Robert DeNiro, Joker presents the story of Arthur Fleck, a failed comedian with a turbulent life who becomes the Clown Prince of Crime, the most feared character in Gothic City. Being more of a character studio than a movie full of epic clashes, Joker is one of the few comic films to receive an ERE rating. With a property as emblematic as its protagonist, getting authorization to take the film beyond the limits was not an easy task for co-writer and director Todd Phillips. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Phillips explained why he decided to use this character to tell a comic story different from the others. He also talked about everything he did to get a green light to carry out his ingenious project, even with an "R" rating. Phillips explained that the inspiration for the movie came while attending the War Dogs premiere in August 2016. He couldn't help but get distracted by the billboard of a comic book movie that was everywhere at the time. He didn't say which, but as Times pointed out, Suicide Squad was on the card at the time, in which Jared Leto made his debut as the Joker. Phillips is known for comedies as "What Happened Yesterday?", But he is also a Scorsese disciple. The director said it is a shame that films have not been made for a long time to study a character, something Scorsese was known for thanks to films like Taxi Driver of 74 and Raging Bull of 80, both starring DeNiro. While Phillips admired the publicity of that comic film, he lit the lamp. The director said, "I knew that War Dogs was not going to set the world on fire, and then I thought: 'What do people really want to see? The movies I loved all my life, those character studies of the 70s, would no longer be profitable perform today. Then I looked at the billboard and said: 'What if I made a movie focused on that, but studying one of those characters?' "
