Alert on #Japan: sell by mistake deadly portions of fugu fish

A supermarket in the Japanese city of Gamagori sold five packages of fugu fish that had not had their liver removed, an organ that contains a lethal poison. Two of the packages could be located, but two are still missing. This fish, considered a 'delicatessen' in Japan, is so poisonous that the slightest mistake in its preparation can be fatal. The liver, ovaries and skin of the fish contain tetrodotoxin, a poison that affects the nervous system causing paralysis and later death, and against which there is no antidote. Japanese legislation requires special training and a license to cut this fish. Local authorities have activated an emergency system, urging people to return potentially lethal portions. "We ask residents to avoid eating the fugu," local official Koji Takayanagi told AFP.
