Upbeat US Fed keeps interest rates on hold
The US Federal Reserve will keep the federal interest rate at a historic low of zero to 0.25 percent to boost the economic recovery. The central bank says it will maintain the target range for the federal funds rate and continues to anticipate that economic conditions will likely warrant exceptionally low levels for an extended period. Although the US economy continues to strengthen and the labor market is beginning to improve, the Fed says there are reasons to be cautious. High unemployment, sluggish income gains and tight credit are still dampening consumer spending. Commercial real estate remains fragile. And housing activity is still at depressed levels.
