AMLO government captures and then frees the son of Chapo after bloody battle in Culiacán

On Thursday afternoon Culiacán, Sinaloa, was the epicenter of a prolonged shooting between alleged members of the Sinaloa cartel and the Mexican security forces, who had just captured Ovidio Guzmán López, son of drug trafficker Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán. Hours later, the government decided to release him, he told Reuters, to protect lives. So far, the Mexican authorities have not offered a balance of victims. This remarkably violent episode occurs in the same week that a confrontation between armed civilians and the Army in the state of Guerrero left 15 dead; and that the massacre of at least 13 police officers in the state of Michoacán, which happened on Tuesday, hours after the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador presented the figures of his security strategy.
