From the White House in Washington D.C., Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin told reporters that US sanctions will prevent Maduro Moros from diverting assets from Venezuela until the executive power is transferred to a transitional government or elected with democratic norms. The US official clarified that Citgo will continue its operations, as long as its profits are deposited in a blocked account in the US; However, Maduro Moros said that the intention is to steal the company from the people of Venezuela. In parallel with Mnuchin's announcement, the head of the National Assembly of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó, who proclaimed himself interim president, announced in Caracas that he assumed control of Venezuela's assets abroad to prevent Maduro Moros from keeping the resources in an eventual exit from power.
