NASA reveals video snowmelt in the Arctic

The ice around the Arctic Ocean and adjacent seas has declined dramatically in recent decades, according to a video released by NASA. The space agency has studied the evolution of Arctic ice by comparing the state of the ocean in September 1984 with the same month this year. The results show that the oldest ice is disappearing, although it is thicker and stronger than the new, before rising summer temperatures. Now the sea ice is more vulnerable to warming of the ocean and the atmosphere. Measurements of ocean ice thickness are sporadic and incomplete, so scientists have had to develop estimates to follow its evolution since 1984. This NASA study shows how the Arctic ice has been growing and shrinking since then become depleted in area, thickness and age of the ice.
