120 dead and 300 injured after earthquake in Italy

Several strong earthquakes shook central Italy in the morning (local time) and killed, so far, 120 people according to the Italian Civil Protection Department. There are also many people trapped in the rubble. The ground shaking woke the inhabitants of Rome, about 160 kilometers southwest. The first quake, measuring 6.2, was felt at 3:36 a. m, about 100 kilometers southwest of Norcia, in Umbria region.; then 40 earthquakes were felt during the next three hours, including one of magnitude 5.5 at 4:33 a. m. You may increase the number of deaths due to the number of missing persons. The Italian authorities mentioned that the intensity of the first quake is comparable to the 2009 earthquake in the Abruzzo region, which killed more than 300 people and left more than 65,000 homeless. The populations of three -Umbria, Lazio and Marche- regions were devastated by earthquakes, which were felt from Bologna (in the north) to Naples (south). Accumoli, Amatrice, Arquata del Tronto and Pescara del Tronto are among the most affected. The mayor of Accumoli reported that there were people who had died. In Pesccara del Tronto, in the province of Ascoli Piceno, the authorities mentioned that two people died.
