Death penalty could face the attacker Los Angeles Airport

The family and friends of Gerardo I. Hernandez, the security officer killed at the airport in Los Angeles , he is remembered as a family man who always smiled to passengers using the airport . Born in El Salvador , Hernandez was the youngest of four children. He moved to the U.S. when he was 15. Four years later he met his wife, whom he married on Valentine's Day 1998. "I always excited to go to work and enjoyed the interaction with LAX passengers ," said his wife Anne " was a cheerful, always smiling. Ana Hernandez made ??a brief statement Saturday outside the couple's home in Porter Ranch in the San Fernando Valley . His hands trembled and his voice cracked as he read a piece of paper , sometimes pausing . " Gary was a great man who always showed his love for our family . Was always there to help anyone in need and always made people laugh with his wonderful sense of humor ," he said . Hernandez is the first TSA agent who dies in the line of duty since the agency was created 12 years ago . Authorities said Paul Ciancia , 23 , walked in on Friday at Terminal 3 of the airport, pulled a semiautomatic AR -15 rifle from a bag and started shooting at the TSA agents . Hernandez, who had worked at the airport, commonly known as LAX- since 2010, was mortally wounded . He would have turned 40 next week. Two other TSA officers were injured. Both received medical attention at a hospital and were discharged . The airport staff was busy trying to save Hernandez, said police chief Patrick Gannon LAX . He was given first aid before paramedics arrived and took him out in a wheelchair towards the ambulance , he said. The TSA Administrator John Pistole offered condolences to the family of Hernandez on Saturday , and spent about 30 minutes at home in the family. Pistole said the agency would review its policy on officer safety . TSA agents are " the first line of defense" in airport security , he said, adding that the agency would do everything possible to ensure that Friday's tragedy is not repeated. In the afternoon , the U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte Jr. said murder charges were filed against Ciancia Hernandez 's death and committing violence at an international airport . It could be sentenced to capital punishment. Kevin Maxwell , a friend and former collaborator of the TSA , said Hernandez was a family man . " All he talked about was his family," Maxwell told KNBC - TV broadcaster . "I was very proud of his son , who plays football ."
