India grinds to halt as strikes and protests held nationwide

Nationalist and left-wing political parties in India called a nationwide strike on September 20 over the price of diesel and government plans to relax rules on foreign direct investment in retailers. Protesters disrupted parts of the rail network in the country but the impact of the strike or 'bandh' was limited in other parts, Among the regions affected were Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Calcutta and Bangalore.
