No Say No to Homophobia World Day Against Homophobia May 17

The International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (English, International Day Against Homophobia, IDAHO) is celebrated on May 17 coinciding with the elimination in 1990 of the homosexualidadde the list of mental illnesses by the General Assembly of the World (WHO). But transsexualism is still part of the manuals of psychiatry ICD-10 and DSM-IV, where is defined as "sexual identity disturbance" 2. Today about 80 countries around the world criminalize homosexuality and condemn sexual acts between same sex with imprisonment, nine of these countries (Afghanistan, Mauritania, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Yemen) hold for these death penalty cases. Discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity is not officially recognized by the member states of the United Nations (even though human rights organizations like Human Rights Committee has repeatedly condemned discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity). In 2005 IDAHO was celebrated in over 40 countries, from France to Hong Kong. They set out a range of initiatives that were widely covered by media. In Iran, despite the brutal government homophobia, IDAHO was discussed in numerous Internet blogs and thousands of electronic mailing. In Kiev (Ukraine), gave a huge balloon with the inscription: "Say NO to homophobia."
