Dogs celebrate Children’s Day in ageing Japan

A growing number of pet owners in Japan are having their dogs and cats blessed during the traditional Shichi-Go-San coming-of-age festival for children. The “seven-five-three” ceremony is usually for boys and girls as they reach those ages. But at the Inuneko Jinja or “dog-cat shrine” within the Zama Shrine in Kanagawa prefecture south of the capital Tokyo, shiba inu dogs dressed in kimonos attend the ritual with their owners.
