Satellite Eyes Hurricane Katia on the Move

An animation of NOAA satellite observations from August 28 at 4:45 p.m. EDT through August 31 at 4:45 p.m. EDT shows Katia's growth from a tropical storm into a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. On September 1, Katia's maximum sustained winds were 75 mph and she was over 1,000 miles east of the Leeward Islands. The GOES-13 cloud images are overlaid on a true-color NASA/MODIS map.
