The apocalypse: Is the end of the world approaching?

The end of the world is one of humanity's greatest fears. In the last 2000 years the apocalypse has been predicted some 200 times, although it has evidently not come to pass. Are we out of the woods? What if the prophets were right and had simply made a miscalculation? As of February 24, 2023, the famous "apocalypse clock" on the website of the NGO Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists reads 90 seconds to midnight. This indicates that humanity has never been so close to its demise. However, this counter is only an allegory that cannot be understood literally. However, is it possible to calculate the exact date of the apocalypse? In the late Middle Ages, mathematicians such as Michael Stifel made complex numerical interpretations of Bible texts for this purpose. And even Isaac Newton himself would have devoted more words to the exegesis of the apocalypse than to physics, says historian Johannes Fried. According to Newton's calculations, we are already at the end of time. But don't we have much more accurate scientific methods at our disposal today? Of course, we are able to predict whether a certain comet or asteroid might hit our planet. However, the greatest danger today is ourselves, creating catastrophes such as environmental destruction, wars and climate change. And, as history reminds us, societies are not systematic.
