US charges Chinese manufacturers for alleged fentanyl ingredient trafficking in landmark case

The US Justice Department filed criminal charges on June 23, 2023, against four Chinese chemical companies and eight individuals for allegedly trafficking ingredients used to make fentanyl, a highly addictive painkiller that fuelled the opioid crisis in the United States. The court indictments were the first filed against Chinese entities. China’s Foreign Ministry responded by criticising the move as harming the interests of Chinese companies.
