Agatha leaves at least 8 people missing in Oaxaca; weakens to tropical depression

The State Coordination of Civil Protection of Oaxaca reported at least eight people missing due to the passage of Agatha as a category 2 hurricane in the state. It confirmed that three people are missing in San Carlos Yautepec and San Juan Ozolotepec. In addition, five more people are missing due to landslides and overflowing rivers in San Miguel del Puerto, Huatulco, and San Mateo Piñas, where residents remain cut off from communication due to the effects of the hurricane. They also reported three people trapped on the Herradura road, in the community of Paso de Limón, in Santa María Huatulco and three people cut off in Santa Catarina Jamixtepec. Agatha, which weakened today to a tropical depression, is causing torrential rains in Campeche, Chiapas, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Tabasco and Veracruz, in addition to strong wind gusts in the south of the country. Agatha is located between the limits of Oaxaca and southern Veracruz, 70 kilometers south of Acayucan and 125 kilometers north-northeast of Salina Cruz. Agatha moves northeast at 13 kilometers per hour, with maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour and gusts of 65 kilometers per hour. Authorities asked the population to take precautions since the rains could generate an increase in the levels of rivers and streams, as well as landslides and floods in low-lying areas. Agatha made landfall last Monday, May 30, 2022, as a category two hurricane 10 kilometers from Puerto Angel in San Pedro Pochutla, causing damage to homes, roads and beach restaurants.
