The Tsar bomb was the most powerful nuclear weapon in history. Manufactured by the USSR to demonstrate its technological power in the arms race with the US, Moscow tested it on October 30, 1961. Its detonation, of a power thousands of times higher than that of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, was one of the reasons that led to the signing of several international treaties on the prohibition of nuclear tests.
