Claiming the Democratic presidential nomination, Barack Obama becomes the first African-American to lead a major U.S. party in the race for the White House. Obama, a forty-six year old first-term US Senator from Illinois, began his career as a community organizer in Chicago after graduating from Harvard Law School. He outpaced other contenders for the Democratic nomination with an emphasis on changing the political status quo in Washington.
