At the beginning of the 14th century, Gretel and Hansel lived in abject poverty in Bavaria. Their father died years ago and their mother is now married to an evil man. With no resources and a growing fear of their stepfather, Gretel and Hansel decide to flee the village in search of a better future. In their flight, and despite the help of a noble hunter, they become disoriented and end up lost in a deep, dark forest. When they come across a cabin, inhabited by a kindly old woman, Gretel and Hansel believe they have found a safe haven. But the endless feasts the woman holds in times of famine, the strange whispers of lost children and the magical apparitions in their home suggest that things may not be what they seem.
