Rezervoir Dogs XXX Trailer (Parody)

Jeffrey Laub, a film maker who has taught a class on the Reservoir Dogs movie, visited the set shoot of the Reservoir Dogs porn parody movie, and reports for Bleeding Cool; I will confess to having never watched an adult movie. Certainly, I have watched my fair share of pornography, even dating back to the days of watching “scrambled porn,” a coming-of-age ritual that has, I fear, been left in the past. Indeed, the surfeit of adult content available at the click of a mouse button (or the tap of an iPad) necessitates that pornography do something to convince consumers to actually pay money for their porn. Recently, that necessity has resulted in a flood of porn parodies, everything from the Adam West-era Batman to The Simpsons. For most of these titles, the attraction is obvious: the combination of sex with a beloved pop culture staple, and the opportunity to watch the enactment of fantasies that many surely harbor. Most everyone has had, at one time or another, a desire to watch Batman strip Catwoman from her skintight suit, or see Mulder and Scully do a little intimate investigating of each other. That is what makes Reservoir Dogs such a curious choice for a porn parody. There is no doubt that Dogs is widely celebrated and loved, but as fodder for a porn parody, it seems one of the least likely candidates of the Tarantino oeuvre. Indeed, the films that seem tailor-made for pornography are Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2. It is easy to imagine a Bride seducing and fornicating her way through the list of people who betrayed her, all leading up to the head honcho. But Reservoir Dogs? I doubt anyone has ever watched the movie and said, “You know what would be hot? If all the thieves were women and started banging some of the supporting male characters.” Regardless of if anyone ever entertained this fantasy, that is what we will be getting in Reservoir Dogs XXX: An Exquisite Films Parody. When I first heard of a Reservoir Dogs porn parody, I wondered what changes would be made, other than the publicly announced gender reversal of the thieves to females. Would the thieves now be attempting to rob a dildo factory? Would the famous tipping discussion now be transplanted to a strip club? Instead of torturing the cop for answers, would the thieves now try to sensuously tease answers out of him? The answer to all these questions is no. When I visited the set of Reservoir Dogs XXX, I was allowed to see a copy of the script. After flipping through several pages, I realized that I was holding a copy of the original Reservoir Dogs script by Quentin Tarantino, with a “Reservoir Dogs XXX” cover page stapled to it. According to a press release from Exquisite Films, the final product will be three hours long. Not surprisingly, since they are basically re-shooting the original script with porn actors and adding sex scenes. As I watched the filming of the opening warehouse scene and Ms. White drags a bleeding Ms. Orange onto a palette, I was impressed by the attention to detail of the director, General Stone. On his monitor, he would flip back and forth between his cameraman%u2019s shot and the footage from the original film, ensuring that he was faithfully recreating the original. Stone even went so far as to have Ms. White fold some loose change into her handkerchief, so that when she pulled it out of her pocket to wipe Ms. Orange%u2019s face, the change would fall to the ground, just like it did with Harvey Keitel. In a way, porn has become the opposite of those religious companies that will take movies and edit out all objectionable material to make them family-friendly. Porn is taking the movies you love and adding some sleaze. But by hewing so close to the original, I wonder if Reservoir Dogs XXX will alienate part of its potential audience. The original opening warehouse scene is a very sensual moment between Mr. White and Mr. Orange. White unbuttons Orange%u2019s pants, he caresses his face, and he even whispers something in Orange%u2019s ear that is too intimate to be shared with the audience. This type of intimacy between two tough thieves would be unacceptable if not for Orange%u2019s mortal wound. That is one of the major themes of Reservoir Dogs: men are only allowed to display affection for one another in the presence of violence. At the end of the day, Reservoir Dogs is a love story between Mr. White and Mr. Orange. Female physical intimacy does not share such restrictions. Ms. Orange does not need to be shot in the belly to have Ms. White caress her face, she could do that just as a friendly, playful gesture. On top of this, we are accepting of men covered in blood, but women? When I see the lovely Chanel Preston soaked in blood as Ms. Orange, of the many things that image inspires, one of them is not the desire to see her in a sex scene later. Violence gives men an opportunity to be vulnerable, but women do not require this crutch. By casting the female thieves in the same bloody light, will most audiences be put off (except for the people who are into that sort of thing)? Of course, all of this is putting way too much thought into the whole affair. I taught a course on Reservoir Dogs in college, and I was instructed to report on this set visit from a film scholar%u2019s perspective. However, there is no real mystery here: Reservoir Dogs XXX is taking a beloved film and sexing it up. Will these actresses deliver the lines as well as Harvey Keitel or Tim Roth? Of course not, but this is about paying homage and having fun, a mood that was evident on set. There are not any messages about male intimacy or professionalism or tipping etiquette here, only an effort to titillate and entertain.
