Driver Loses Control During Police Chase
Police have arrested three men following a cross-county, high-speed chase and crash. No one was severely injured after the chase ended Tuesday, at around 11:40 in the morning. The crash occurred after the driver of a 2012 black Mercedes exited at Broward Boulevard from Interstate 95. The car came to a stop in the median at the exit of I-95, near Broward Boulevard. Once stopped on the Broward Boulevard ramp, two of the people in the car attempted to run away, but were quickly apprehended by police after a short foot chase across the street. A third person laid on the ground outside the vehicle, and police took him into custody. One of the suspects arrested is allegedly a 17-year-old male. His mother, Tracy Westbrook, arrived to the scene where the chase ended rather quick after watching the pursuit on TV. "This looks bad," she said, "and I want to know what happened." She claimed her son was picked up by the other two and could not have possibly participated in the three burglaries they are accused of committing in Kendall and Pinecrest, because he has trouble walking. "George is crippled he can barely walk," she said. "I don't know what kind of burglary he could do." Police recovered a laptop computer and jewelry inside the suspects' vehicle. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue treated two women after their car was rear-ended when the chase came to an end. She was transported from the scene in unknown condition to be checked out. During the pursuit, as the vehicle crossed Miami Gardens Boulevard, the right front tire blew out, but the car kept going. The chase reached speeds over 100 mph. The chase began in Miami Lakes where Miami-Dade Police were working a burglary detail. They spotted the black vehicle and tried to pull it over, but the driver refused to stop. The exit to Broward Boulevard was heavily blocked and was reduced to one lane as police continued their investigation. All three subjects who were arrested are expected to appear in court on Wednesday.
