Since the very first bedtime, children around the world have known that once their parents tuck them into bed and shut off the light, monsters lie waiting behind closet doors, ready to emerge. But what they don't realize is that these monsters scare children because they have to. It's their job. Monsters Incorporated is the largest scream-processing factory in the monster world. Their patented "Closet Door" scare method is quick and efficient, bringing a child's closet door from a massive door vault - which holds one door for every child in the world - via a state-of-the-art computerized door track delivery system. The monster enters the child's room through the activated closet door, scares the child and collects the scream. The refined scream provides power to everything in the monster world, from cars and lights to televisions. The key to this operation is a highly trained group of elite Kid Scarers. One of the very best Scarers is James P. Sullivan, a huge, intimidating monster with blue fur, large purple spots and horns. A natural-born Scarer, Sulley is relaxed and laid back about his coveted position. His Scare Assistant - also his best friend and roommate - is Mike Wazowski, a green, opinionated, feisty little one-eyed monster. Where Sulley is low key and easy going, Mike more than makes up for it with his limitless energy. Since children are considered to be an extreme threat to monsters, it is absolutely forbidden for anything from the human world to cross into the monster world - even a stray sock alerts a task force. One night after work, however, Sulley opens a closet door and accidentally lets in a little human girl! From the moment on, Mike and Sulley's lives are turned upside down. With the Child Detection Agency (CDA) hot on their trail, they do everything they can to hide the little girl. To make matters worse, Sully develops an attachment to the child, whom he has named Boo, and feels obligated to sneak her back to her room safely. Mike is shocked, and sees his golden future at Monsters, Inc. slipping away as he and Sully bungle one opportunity after another to return Boo home. When Sulley's affection for Boo leads him to give up his job as a Scarer, Sulley and Mike's friendship is pushed to the breaking point. After many fur-raising escapades, Sulley and Mike return Boo to the human world, uncover a conspiracy at Monsters Inc. and mend their broken friendship. In the process, they realize that children are not a threat to monsters. In fact, the two discover something that changes the monster world forever - that a child's laughter is far more powerful than a scream.
